Honors Community

Living in the Honors Community has several advantages including a strong student community, access to in-hall classroom space, and an atmosphere conducive to study.  The Honors Community is dedicated to students admitted to the Honors College who want a living environment that will help them pursue their academic goals.  The Honors College is for students who exhibit extraordinary academic success and who strive to constantly challenge themselves in their educational pursuits.

Community Benefits

  • A Cohesive Academic Community: The Honors College LLC creates a space where students admitted to the Honors College can live together, building a stronger sense of community among peers.
  • Convenience and Accessibility: Select Honors classes are held within the residence hall, meaning students can easily attend specialized courses without having to travel across campus.
    • The classes taught in the building are seminar style classes. These are smaller sized (about 15-20 students) and consist of more class discussion than professor lectures.
  • Quiet Hours for Academic Focus: The Honors Community has extended quiet hours. During these hours, noise is kept to a minimum, allowing students to focus without distractions.
    • Sunday through Thursday quiet hours begin at 8pm, Friday and Saturday begin at 10pm. Quiet hours end at 10am daily.
  • Additional Leadership and Programmatic Opportunities: Student have the opportunity to be in and lead additional programs within the Honors College. This includes the Honors College Leadership Council (HCLC) which gives students a chance to enhance their leadership skills, network with peers and faculty, and contribute to the development of programs that benefit the entire Honors College community.

Important Honors Community Admissions Information

All incoming first-year Honors students who live in University Housing will automatically be assigned to Douglass House. Returning Honors students can select a room in the Honors Community during the Living Learning Communities room sign-up, as long as at least one of their roommates is also an Honors College student.

Students seeking to be assigned to the Honors LLC do not need to complete the LLC Application since Honors College students are automatically assigned to Douglass. However, if a student has applied to the Honors College, has not yet been admitted, and has interest in other LLCs, they are encouraged to apply to other LLCs in case they are not selected for the Honors College.

Honors students are guaranteed on-campus housing in Douglass House for the duration of their time at É«»¨ÌÃ, as long as they maintain their Honors College status, meet all housing deposit deadlines, and live in Douglass House continuously starting in the Fall semester. For students entering in the Spring, assignments to Douglass House will depend on room availability.

Roommates in Douglass House may or may not be Honors students. If there are open spaces after all Honors students are assigned, non-Honors students may be placed in the building as well. Due to high demand for on-campus housing, roommate requests between an Honors student and a non-Honors student cannot be guaranteed at this time.

LLC at a Glance

The Honors Community is located in the Douglass House. Douglass House offers rooms with private bathrooms (students are responsible for cleaning the bathroom). Rooms are traditionally for 2 students.

In cases when HRL receives an overwhelming amount of interest in living on campus the number of available accommodations will be increased by converting some double rooms into triples. These specially configured and furnished rooms can accommodate up to three people. These triples are temporary, and students will be moved out as space becomes available on campus. Students assigned to a fall triple will be notified via email when assignments are sent out in August.

This community is in partnership with the Honors College and Housing & Residence Life and was established in 1998 in Richmond Hall before moving to Douglass House in 2011.

The Honors LLC does not specific linked courses. However, the Honors College has unique curricular requirements and hosts some courses in the Douglass House MPR. More information about the Honors College curriculum is available on the Honors College website.

Incoming freshman living in Douglass Hall are designated for specific move-in slots during the fall term. Typically, these slots fall one day prior to first-year move-in days to allow time for Honors students to experience both an Honors College orientation and regular Welcome to É«»¨Ìà events. Honors College students will receive specific communication regarding their move-in time and the Honors College orientation from HRL and the Honors College over the summer.
